    First documented record of a living solemyid bivalve in a pockmark of the Nile Deep-sea Fan (eastern Mediterranean Sea)

    A living specimen of a solemyid bivalve was collected at bathyal depths near a pockmark in the Nile Deep-sea Fan (eastern Mediterranean) and is here presented. Both taxonomic and molecular results suggest a Solemya species but due to the small size of the animal and the lack of molecular data for other solemyid species the species cannot be determined.     Fifteen specimens of nautiliniellid polychaetes were found in the mantle cavity of bivalves of the genus Acharax (Solemyidae) collected in several mud volcanoes from the Gulf of Cadiz. They were identified as Natsushima bifurcata Miura and Laubier (1990), a species previously known only from Sagami Bay (Japan). The morphological comparison of these specimens with the holotype suggests that they belong to the same morphological species, although further studies should consider whether they could be genetically different. The ecology of the species is discussed in relation to the available information on the family. The occurrence of Natsushima bifurcata in the Gulf of Cadiz is the first record of the species in the North Atlantic.Quince ejemplares de poliquetos pertenecientes a la familia Nautiliniellidae se encontraron en la cavidad del manto de bivalvos del género Acharax (Solemyidae) procedentes de varios volcanes de fango del Golfo de Cádiz.     Hereditary breast cancer and ancestry in the Madeira archipelago: An exploratory study

    Access to genetic testing and counselling in remote areas such as the Madeira archipelago, in the Northern Atlantic Ocean, may be complex. Different counselling methods, including telegenetics, should be explored. In this study, we characterise the Hereditary Breast/Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) families with Madeira ancestry enrolled in our programme. Of a total of 3, 566 index patients tested between January 2000 and June 2018, 68 had Madeira ancestry and 22 were diagnosed with a pathogenic germline variant (PV). As in the whole group, BRCA2 PV were more frequent in Madeira patients (68.4%: c.9382C>T (26.3%), c.658_659del (21%), c.156_157insAlu (10.5%), c.793+1G>A (5.3%) and c.298A>T (5.3%). However, the most frequently diagnosed PV in Madeira patients was the BRCA1 c.3331_3334del (31.6%). BRCA1/2 detection rates were 27.9% and 10.5% for Madeira and the whole group, respectively. This study is the first characterisation of HBOC patients with Madeira ancestry. A distinct pattern of BRCA1/2 variants was observed, and the geographic clustering of BRCA1 c.3331_3334del variant may support the possibility of a founder mutation previously described in Northern Portugal. The high detection rate observed reinforces the need to reduce gaps in access to genetic testing in Madeira and other remote areas.     Unexpected high abyssal ophiuroid diversity in polymetallic nodule fields of the Northeast Pacific Ocean, and implications for conservation

    The largest and commercially appealing mineral deposits can be found in the abyssal seafloor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), a polymetallic nodule province, in the NE Pacific Ocean, where experimental mining is due to take place. In anticipation of deep-sea mining impacts, it has become essential to rapidly and accurately assess biodiversity. For this reason, ophiuroid material collected during seven scientific cruises from five exploration license areas within CCZ, one area protected from mining (APEI3, Area of Particular Environmental Interest) in the periphery of CCZ and the DIS-turbance and re-COLonisation (DISCOL) Experimental Area (DEA), in the SE Pacific Ocean, was examined. Specimens were genetically analysed using a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). Maximum Likelihood and Neighbour Joining trees were constructed, while four tree-based and distance-based methods of species delineation (ABGD, BINs, GMYC, mPTP) were employed to propose Secondary Species Hypotheses (SSHs) within the ophiuroids collected. The species delimitations analyses concordant results revealed the presence of 43 deep-sea brittle stars SSHs, revealing an unexpectedly high diversity and showing that the most conspicuous invertebrates in abyssal plains have been so far considerably under-estimated. The number of SSHs found in each area varied from 5 (IFREMER area) to 24 (BGR area), while 13 SSHs were represented by singletons. None of the SSHs was found to be present in all 7 areas, while the majority of species (44.2 %) had a single-area presence (19 SSHs). The most common species were Ophioleucidae sp. (Species 29), Amphioplus daleus (Species 2) and Ophiosphalma glabrum (Species 3), present in all areas except APEI3. The biodiversity patterns could be mainly attributed to POC fluxes that could explain the highest species numbers found in BGR (German contractor area) and UKSRL (UK contractor area) areas. The five exploration contract areas belong to a mesotrophic province, while in contrary the APEI3 is located in an oligotrophic province which could explain the lowest diversity as well as very low similarity with the other six study areas. Based on these results the representativeness and the appropriateness of APEI3 to meet its purpose of preserving the biodiversity of the CCZ fauna are questioned. Finally, this study provides the foundation for biogeographic and functional analyses that will provide insight into the drivers of species diversity and its role in ecosystem function

    Processo de cuidados à pessoa com delírio de Cotard: Uma reflexão sobre a ação.

    No processo de cuidados à pessoa com doença mental, no contexto do Estágio V – Enfermagem de Saúde Mental e Psiquiatria, prestamos cuidados à pessoa com delírio de Cotard, o que despoletou o nosso interesse no aprofundar desta temática. Cotard diz-nos que “as pessoas que demonstram este tipo de delírios apresentam a recusa dos próprios órgãos e sangue, além de acreditarem que todas as suas partes corpóreas, incluindo a alma, estão mortas” (citado por Olmi, Rossa & Furlanetto, 2016, pp.96-97). A intervenção do enfermeiro perante a pessoa que apresenta delírios, deve ser em primeiro lugar, zelar pela segurança do doente e depois procurar controlar os delírios, muitas vezes em articulação com a psicofarmacologia (Stuart e Laraia, 2006). Objetivos: Explicitar o papel do enfermeiro junto da pessoa com delírio de Cotard; Apresentar a reflexão sobre a tomada de decisão no processo de cuidados à pessoa com delírio de Cotard. Materiais e métodos: Atendendo à importância que a reflexão assume no processo de aprendizagem, considera-se pertinente o recurso à reflexão sobre a ação tendo por base o ciclo reflexivo de Gibbs (Santos e Fernandes, 2004). Resultados: A reflexão sobre a situação da prática de cuidados à pessoa com delírio de Cotard, no decorrer do processo de ensino-aprendizagem, facilitou nos estudantes o desenvolvimento do sentido critico indo ao encontro do que defende Madeira (2014, p.30) quando afirma que a exploração de situações da prática permite “a apreensão concreta de uma situação para a representação abstrata e conceptual”. Conclusões A oportunidade de prestar cuidados à pessoa com delírio de Cotard e a reflexão sobre a ação permitiram integrar os principais conceitos que suportam a intervenção do enfermeiro à pessoa com atividade delirante.     Bottom-trawling fisheries influence on standing stocks, composition, diversity and trophic redundancy of macrofaunal assemblages from the West Iberian Margin

    Bottom-trawling fisheries operating in Portugal (West Iberian Margin) impose one of the largest footprints per unit of biomass landed in European waters at depths greater than 200 m, affecting the seafloor integrity and the associated benthic fauna. To investigate how trawling pressure is affecting the macrofaunal assemblages, we compared the standing stock (abundance and biomass), community structure and taxonomical and trophic diversity in areas subjected to varying trawling pressure along the SW Portuguese upper slope, between 200 and 600 m. In addition to trawling pressure, several environmental variables, namely depth, grain size and organic matter, were correlated with the biological component, which suggest that the longstanding trawling pressure presents cumulative effects to the habitat heterogeneity known to characterise the West Iberian Margin fauna. Furthermore, our results showed a depletion of macro-infaunal abundances in both the fishing ground and the adjacent area (up to 3 times lower), when compared to the area not trawled. The observed decrease in abundance with increasing trawling pressure was also associated with a loss of species and trophic richness, but univariate diversity indices related with community structure (i.e. Shannon-Wiener index, Pielou's evenness) failed to detect consistent differences across areas. Also observed was a decrease in the number of taxa – trophic guilds combinations of the core assemblage (i.e. characteristic, dominant or frequent taxa) with increasing trawling pressure. We suggest that, in disturbed sediments, the lower functional redundancy resulting from the loss of species within most feeding guilds increases the vulnerability of trophic interactions and therefore of the whole assemblage to further increases in natural and anthropogenic disturbance or their synergistic effects.publishe

    Spinaxinus (Bivalvia: Thyasiroidea) from sulfide biogenerators in the Gulf of Mexico and hydrothermal vents in the Fiji Back Arc: Chemosymbiosis and Taxonomy

    Two new species of the thyasirid genus Spinaxinus (S. emicatus Oliver n. sp. and S. phrixicus Oliver n. sp.) are described from the Gulf of Mexico and the southwest Pacific, respectively. Both are compared with the type species of the genus, the eastern Atlantic S. sentosus Oliver and Holmes, 2006. Living specimens from the Gulf of Mexico were retrieved from artificial sulfide bio-generators on the upper Louisiana Slope. Gill morphology and molecular markers from the symbiotic bacteria confirm that Spinaxinus is chemosynthetic and that the chemoautotrophic bacteria are related to sulfide oxidizing Gammaproteobacteria. Living specimens from the southwest Pacific were retrieved from hydrothermal vent sites in the Fiji and Lau Back Arc Basins. In the Atlantic Spinaxinus is now recorded from two anthropogenic situations and appears to be generally absent from natural cold seep sites and not yet recorded at any hydrothermal sites. The primarily anthropogenic distribution of Spinaxinus in the Atlantic is discussed with reference to the natural hydrothermal vent habitat of the Pacific S. phrixicus.Spinaxinus (Bivalvia: Thyasiroidea) de bio-generadores artificiales de sulfuro situados en el Golfo de Méjico y en fuentes hidrotermales de las Islas Fiji: quimiosimbiosis y taxonomía. – En este trabajo se describen dos especies nuevas de tisárido del género Spinaxinus (S. emcatus Oliver n. sp. y S. phrixicus Oliver n. sp.) encontradas res- pectivamente en el Golfo de Méjico y en el sureste del Pacífico. Se comparan estas dos especies nuevas con la especie tipo del género, S. sentous Oliver y Holmes, 2006 descrita en el Este del Atlántico. Para describir estas dos especies, se observaron ejemplares vivos recolectados sobre bio-generadores artificiales de sulfuro situados en la parte alta de la plataforma conti- nental de Louisiana, en el Golfo de Méjico. Las observaciones realizadas de las branquias de Spinaxinus y la caracterización genética de las bacterias simbiontes en estos ejemplares confirmaron que Spinaxinus es un género quimiosintético que con- tiene bacterias quimioautótrofas cercanas a las Gammaproteobacterias responsables de la oxidación del sulfuro. También se recolectaron ejemplares vivos de fuentes hidrotermales situadas en las Islas Fiji y en ‘Lau Back Arc Basins’ ambas localiza- das en el Pacífico suroccidental. La especie atlántica de Spinaxinus se encontró en dos tipos de sustratos artificiales mientras que parece que esta especie no se encuentra en ambientes naturales equivalentes como serían las surgencias frías y las fuentes hidrotermales. La distribución aparentemente limitada de la especie atlántica se discute en relación con la distribución de S. phrixicus en las fuentes hidrotermales del Pacífico

The dipeptide is known to show molecular flexibility in different environments, which leads to polymorphism. The crystal structure of the glycyl-L-alanine HI.H2O polymorph is determined at room temperature and indicates that the space group is polar (P21), with two molecules per unit cell and unit cell parameters a = 7.747 Å, b = 6.435 Å, c = 10.941 Å, α = 90°, β = 107.53(3)°, γ = 90° and V = 520.1(7) Å3. Crystallization in the polar point group 2, with one polar axis parallel to the b axis, allows pyroelectricity and optical second harmonic generation. Thermal melting of the glycyl-L-alanine HI.H2O polymorph starts at 533 K, close to the melting temperature reported for cyclo-glycyl-L-alanine (531 K) and 32 K lower than that reported for linear glycyl-L-alanine dipeptide (563 K), suggesting that although the dipeptide, when crystallized in the polymorphic form, is not anymore in its cyclic form, it keeps a memory of its initial closed chain and therefore shows a thermal memory effect. Here, we report a pyroelectric coefficient as high as 45 µC/m2K occurring at 345 K, one order of magnitude smaller than that of semi-organic ferroelectric triglycine sulphate (TGS) crystal. Moreover, the glycyl-L-alanine HI.H2O polymorph displays a nonlinear optical effective coefficient of 0.14 pm/V, around 14 times smaller than the value from a phase-matched inorganic barium borate (BBO) single crystal.     Combined use of phosphonium-erythrosin B-based nanoGUMBOS, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and chemometrics for discrimination and quantification of proteins

    Nanoparticles derived from a group of uniform materials based on organic salts (nanoGUMBOS) are considered promising candidates for protein analysis due to their facile synthesis in aqueous media and high tunability. In this study, a phosphonium-erythrosin B-based nanoGUMBOS (i.e., [P4444]2[EB]) was prepared using an ultrasound-assisted reprecipitation method, and its ability to discriminate and quantify proteins was evaluated. Sonication time (30 s, 5 min, and 15 min) and cyclodextrin templating (α-, 2-HP-β-, and γ-CD) were investigated for their effects on discrimination performance of synthesized nanomaterial. Six proteins (albumin, hemoglobin, trypsin, catalase, lysozyme, and cytochrome c) with different abundance levels and physicochemical properties were selected as target analytes. Absorbance response patterns generated from interactions between [P4444]2[EB] nanoGUMBOS and proteins were analyzed using partial least squares discriminant analysis. Percentages of correct protein discrimination ranged from 94.6 to 99.6%, with the latter being the best result obtained using non-templated nanoGUMBOS formed after 5 min sonication. Under optimized conditions, it was possible to discriminate all protein samples with percentages of correct assignments greater than 90% for concentrations as low as 2.0 μg mL−1. The discrimination capability of synthesized nanoGUMBOS was further evaluated using mixtures of different ratios of lysozyme, cytochrome c, and hemoglobin. Finally, partial least squares models were developed for protein quantification and the best performance was observed for albumin. Results support potential use of [P4444]2[EB] nanoGUMBOS in combination with ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and chemometrics for qualitative and quantitative analyses of individual proteins and mixtures of proteins.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
